ABOUT THE EVENT

Tribolumina

Tribolumina is an ongoing audiovisual project by SpOp & Bruinsma in collaboration with percussionist Christian Smith . The metariality of played upon objects is a central topic for our audiovisual performance. While playing and projecting we are following the phenomenon of Triboluminiscence, in which light may appear while hitting, shaking, rubbing or scratching solid material.

The composition evolves as a live improvisation: a combination of percussion and a set of recorded samples in correlation with projected video. The duo percussionists achieve a unique in between meditative and extatic sound, with rhythms emerging out of found metal objects and fabricated instruments. Machinery pieces, chains, bells, plates, dishes and more. These are arranged as a sprawling landscape on surfaces as well as hanging mid-air. Added to that are drums, flexible plastic tubes and electronics manipulated by controllers and pedals.

The live visuals are projected on a single or double screens in a way which is either limited to a screen or scattered over the space. While a second projection might appear on a transparent theater screen partly overlapping the main screen. The images contain filmed and manipulated loops of the very played upon objects with glimpses on the musicians themselves, in combination with architectural designs, frozen or gleaming landscapes, light beams and textures in a bath of fluid to dusty substances.

Dirk Bruinsma works as a composer and musician in various settings, ranging from chamber music to soundtracks for film and dance, free improvisation and experimental rock music. He appears on well over a thirty CD productions, mostly of his own groups and worked with various artists for exhibitions or stage productions.

Marit Shalem, also active as SpOp, is a visual artist, creating experimental video works and projects. Her recent work Milk, a documentary installation has been exhibited at MU Hybrid Art House recently. Her projects often introduce multiple linearities while dealing with identity, communication and commercialism.

Christian Streit Smith is a percussionist living in The Hague. Before moving there in 2016, he received master’s degrees from the Basel School of Music and McGill University, as well as a bachelor’s degree in music from the Oberlin Conservatory. He is a core member of Oerknal (NL) and Gyre (CH), and has played for four years with the Rosa Ensemble and Opera Spanga.

schoco mune x Fred Marty

The collaboration between schoco mune and Fred Marty started in 2022, at Multiversal summer retreat in Besançon, France. They release the first new CD “tempête de sable – 砂嵐” (Eng. Sandstorm) the end of June 2025. Carefully exploring the boundary and connection between two different instruments —acoustic double bass and electronic instrument— delivering a prickly sensation of the frequency on your skin, overwhelming soundscapes will make your senses numb, and you will feel absolute silence finally, like you are in a sandstorm

Fred Marty studied classical double bass at the La Roche-sur-Yon and Boulogne- Billancourt Conservatories, and jazz in Bordeaux. Moving to Paris in 2007, he delved into improvisation, developing a unique style that blends everyday sounds with experimental playing techniques. Since 2009, he has explored musique concrète, often incorporating recorded voice and sound materials that evolve slowly. A member of L’Onceim orchestra since 2012, Marty currently works on his solo project, composes for his quartet, and performs with Elizabeth Czerczuk’s company.

schoco mune is a sound performance project that delivers explosive, noisy, chaotic soundscapes with a strong focus on physicality and intuitive action. It started to liberate from all conventional musical approaches and traditional gender norms in 2020. Using sounds as a tool to embody human perception, pain, emotion, feeling, thoughts, and imagination, “schoco mune” explores its cognitive process, share its experience and sense unheard sounds and voices through its performance.
