Three live music acts, storytelling, chocolate tasting, and vinyl dance party, celebrating 750 years Amsterdam

A synesthetic party, say what now? Yes, for one night only at Mezrab’s (of course) you get to taste bean-to-bar chocolate, hear cacao myths and stories, listen to great live music, and then dance the night away!

Come and celebrate Amsterdam’s 750 years of existence. Being the biggest cacao harbour of the world, we have to address the good, the bad and the ugly truth about chocolate. And taste the best and most sustainable, while we are at it. Plus, there will be cacao fruit cocktails.

Willie B. has been active for over 25 years at blues festivals, pubs and street music festivals in Europe. His first band was called White Chocolate. Expect soulful vocals with a groovy fingerpicking style. Even when he plays his one-string guitar, people dance. The repertoire includes songs by Muddy Waters and Tom Waits. In 2018, Willie B. was the winner of the Dutch Championship Street Musicians in the soloists category.

London-based Laura Reiman is the lead singer of the salsa band Orquestra Estelar. In Mezrab, she will perform some Latin-flavoured songs, such as her own composition “Chocolate”. She is also specialises in chocolate art. In the Cacaomuseum at the CzaarPeter straat, you can find her chocolate paintings, as well as the chocolate tasting method “Taste with Colour”.

The Funky Star Apples is a trio with Attila Gorog, Chris Kat and Henkjan Laats. They will perform six songs that have been composed exclusively for the chocolate evening in Mezrab, ranging from Soul, Flamengo, Reggae, Blues and Latin. Henkjan was the leader of the bands Funkumba in Peru and Uruboys in Bolivia. This will be his first concert in the Netherlands. He will also guide the chocolate tasting with the audience!

Your host of the evening is singer-songwriter and storyteller Karin Giphart, a longtime Mezrabian volunteer. One of her memorable performances was My Vagina Song during the Mezrab Marathon this year. For research, she roasted cocoa beans for a year at Malou’s Wild Child and Macao Movement in Amsterdam-Noord.

The live concerts, storytelling, and tasting will be followed by a vinyl DJ session. Cacao and chocolate inspired many musicians, resulting in incredible Latin, Reggae, Funk and Soul dance music.
