WAT WAS HIE?
WAT WAS HIE? unfolds across the landscapes of the Cape, where land, water, and memory bear witness to what history has tried to bury. Retracing entangled histories of Dutch colonialism, Indigenous erasure, resistance, and slavery, the film moves through sites once inhabited and stewarded by San and Khoe communities, revealing how these histories remain inscribed in the terrain.
Through embodied re-enactment, movement, and poetic reflection, and drawing from stories of Krotoa, slave registers, and the lingering traces of the dop system, suppressed histories resurface as living presence.
WAT WAS HIE? asks a searing question: What was here?—inviting a reckoning with memory, healing, and the persistence of colonial violence in both land and body.

Over Luke De Kock
Luke De Kock is een Zuid-Afrikaanse regisseur, filmmaker, choreograaf en performing artist die lokaal en internationaal werkt op het snijvlak van film en performance. Zijn choreografie was te zien in producties als Honey 3 (Universal Pictures) en Netflix’ Runs In The Family, en hij werkte voor merken als Adidas, BMW en Hennessy. Daarnaast trad hij op met o.a. Toni Braxton en John Legend. Hij is afgestudeerd aan Jazzart Dance Theatre en de University of Cape Town (Theatre and Performance) en staat bekend om zijn site-specific werk waarin hij inheemse geschiedenis, Cape slavery en koloniale uitwissing bevraagt. Eerdere projecten werden gepresenteerd bij o.a. het Castle of Good Hope, Iziko South Africa Museum en tijdens internationale samenwerkingen zoals Sites of Memory en AfroVibes Festival in Nederland.
