Talk: Queer rights and puppetry in Hungary
In Hongarije worden LGBTQ+-thema’s bestempeld als ‘schadelijk voor kinderen’ en zijn ze zwaar beperkt. Verhalen waarin queer personages of gezinnen voorkomen, kunnen niet vrij worden gepubliceerd of verspreid.
Borbála Oláh (Bori) is 32 jaar oud en woont in Boedapest. Zij studeerde theaterdramaturgie en heeft een bijzondere interesse in poppentheater. Twee jaar lang werkte zij als dramaturg in een door de staat gefinancierd poppentheater, waar zij voornamelijk betrokken was bij kindervoorstellingen die lieflijk, “normaal” en goedgekeurd waren door de artistieke leiding. Omdat zij zich daar artistiek niet vrij voelde, nam zij ontslag. Momenteel werkt ze als journalist voor een online magazine.
Voor de lezing op 3 april presenteert zij een nieuw project in een vroege ontwikkelingsfase: een prentenboek voor kinderen en een concept voor een poppenvoorstelling over een queer gezin, bestaande uit twee moeders en hun twee pluchen schaapjes.
“Het project is sterk persoonlijk en gebaseerd op een waargebeurd verhaal. Ik en mijn partner doen alsof wij een gezin vormen en beleven dit ook zo, hoewel het in Hongarije veel moeilijker zou zijn om dit met echte kinderen te realiseren. In feite zou dit verhaal in Hongarije niet openlijk kunnen worden gepubliceerd of verspreid vanwege de zware beperkingen rond LGBTQ+-thema’s. Deze lezing zal de vorm van een hardop denkproces zijn over hoe mijn verhaal en prentenboek in mijn thuisland ontvangen zou worden, in vergelijking met Nederland.”
Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam
Het internationale Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam biedt van 1 t/m 6 april opnieuw een podium aan beeldend theater, poppenspel en performances die de norm bevragen. Het thema van de 5e jubileumeditie is ‘The Nature of Things’ en geeft een radicaal antwoord op het westerse en koloniale framing. Beeldend theatermakers en performers vanuit de hele wereld komen bij elkaar tijdens dit festival.
Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam is queer, feministisch, activistisch en schittert bovenal in eigenwijsheid. Het is het enige festival in Nederland dat poppen- en objecttheater voor volwassenen koppelt aan queer verbeelding . In de safe space die het poppenspel creëert, kan iedereen zijn wie hen, zij, hij, wil en elkaar kan ontmoeten. Verwacht een uitdagende mix van lichamen, verhalen die tegen de bestaande dominante structuren ingaan, visuele & erotische uitspattingen, edgy performances, prikkelende lezingen, queery eten en clubby afters.

Talk: Queer rights in Hungary
In Hungary, LGBTQ+ themes are labeled as “harmful to children” and are heavily restricted. Stories in which includes queer characters or families cannot be freely published or distributed.
Borbála Oláh (Bori) is 32 years old and lives in Budapest. She studied theatre dramaturgy and has a special interest in puppet theatre. For two years, she worked as a dramaturg at a state-funded puppet theatre, where she was mainly involved in children’s performances that were sweet, “normal,” and approved by the artistic leadership. Because she did not feel artistically free there, she quit. She currently works as a journalist for an online magazine.
For the lecture on April 3, she will present a new project in an early stage of development: a children’s picture book and a concept for a puppet performance about a queer family consisting of two mothers and their two plush sheep.
“The project is a very personal and true story. My partner and I act as if we form a family, and we experience it as such, although in Hungary it would be much more difficult to do this with real children. In fact, in Hungary this story could not even be published or distributed openly, due to the severe restrictions surrounding LGBTQ+ themes. This lecture will take the form of a process of thinking out loud about how my story and picture book would be received in my home country, compared to the Netherlands.”
Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam
From April 1st to 6th, the international Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam once again offers a platform for visual theater, puppetry, and performances that defy the norm. The theme of the 5th anniversary edition is "The Nature of Things" and offers a radical response to Western and colonial framing. Visual theater makers and performers from around the world will come together during this festival.
Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam is queer, feminist, activist and above all stands out in quirkiness. It is the only festival in the Netherlands that links puppetry and object theatre for adults to queer imagination. In the safe space created by puppetry, everyone can be who they, she, he, wants and can meet each other. Expect a challenging mix of bodies, stories that refuse to adapt to existing dominant structures, visual & erotic outbursts, edgy performances, stimulating lectures, queery food and clubby afters.
