Our History: Three Documentaries

Our History: Three Documentaries. This autumn, we are doing a documentary series of three films about recent memory from below. Protests in Amsterdam, persecution of communists in Indonesia, and the clandestine party scene.

Join us for a dinner, documentary screening, and open conversations!

The first film will be De Rebelse Stad (The Rebellious City), food will be served at 19h, and we will start the film at 20h, followed by discussion.

De rebelse stad (2015)

(Dutch, subtitled English)

One of the most remarkable protest movements in Dutch history emerged in 60's Amsterdam: the provo's. With their "playful actions" (ludieke acties) they didn't just expose police violence and the authoritarian city government, they also expanded the horizon of the possible. With their "white bikes plan", for example, they placed bikes all around the city, free for everyone to use and to share. With these symbolic actions, they galvanised the youth movements of the 60's and left a huge impact on Dutch society. "De rebelse stad" shows unique footage, helping us understand how a movement of that lasted just two years was able to shift the Dutch political horizon so quickly.
