Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam: Marieke Franssen & Minami Nagai (Composer’s Treat)
Op zaterdag 17 januari om 20.30 uur presenteren we een nieuwe editie van Composer’s Treat in het Plein Theater. De Japanse componiste Minami Nagai (1993) student aan de Muziek- en Theateracademie in München, is door ons uitgenodigd in het Plein Theater om een week lang samen met de veelzijdige fluitiste en ambassadeur van hedendaagse muziek Marieke Franssen te werken aan een nieuw compositie-idee. De presentatie van deze residentie is tijdens de eerste Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam in 2026 met een performance en interviews met de twee kunstenaars.
Daarnaast speelt Franssen een aantal stukken van andere componisten zoals Yan Maresz - Circumambulation (1993), Ruud Roelofsen - Schimmenwereld voor basfluit en live elektronica (2024) (installatie versie), Rozalie Hirs - Article 8 (infinity) for flute and electronic sounds (2014) en Jacq Palinckx delen uit 6x Maximal Music!

Minami Nagai - New work for Marieke Franssen | Composer’s treat residency
Circumambulation speelt in op de polyfone perceptie van een monofoon instrument. Een doorlopende percussieve puls wordt doorkruist door een meer traditionele melodie en creëert een tweestemmigheid die elkaar zowel aanvult als begrenst.
Het materiaal van Schimmenwereld is gebaseerd op teksten uit het ‘Dromenboek’ van auteur en psychotherapeut Frederik van Eeden (bekend van o.a. De koele meren des doods en De kleine Johannes). Roelofsen creëert een akoestische droomwereld door geluiden uit het binnenste van de basfluit te versterken, als het ware onder de microscoop te leggen, en zo het oor van de luisteraar zeer dicht bij de klankbron te brengen. Deze klanken worden ruimtelijk gemaakt door middel van reverbs en delay’s. Roelofsen en Franssen waren uitgenodigd in de gerenommeerde studio’s van de SWR te Freiburg om de elektronica te ontwikkelen.
Article 8 [infinity] van Rozalie Hirs is een microtonale compositie voor fluit en electronic sounds. Zeer lyrische melodieën worden omhuld door, of doorkruisen, elektronische glissandi die zich in meerdere grote golven voortbewegen. De elektronische golven zijn door de componist op maat gemaakt uit pure sinusgolven, waarbij uitsluitend gebruik wordt gemaakt van binaurale beatings en ringmodulatie. Dit resulteert in een haast kosmische klankwereld.
Delen uit 6x Maximal Music! van gitarist, improvisator en componist Jacq Palinckx doorkruisen het programma als flarden herinneringen van gebeurtenissen. Een schijnbaar rustgevende Nocturne, een korte Ringtone, of een wilde improvisatie of een hypnotiserende beat Whang die totaal ontaard.
Marieke Franssen
Marieke is uitvoerder van het meest avontuurlijke hedendaagse repertoire voor fluit. Marieke Franssen studeerde aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam en was stipendiaat aan de Internationale Ensemble Modern Akademie in Frankfurt. Marieke richt zich vooral op het spelen van hedendaagse muziek en speelt in verschillende moderne muziek en improvisatie projecten, waarbij ook samengewerkt wordt met componisten, dansers, elektronica en video. Ze is regelmatig te horen bij ensembles als Asko|Schönberg, het Doelen Ensemble, Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt) en New European Ensemble. Daarnaast speelt ze met veel plezier in het collectief Frisse Oren, waar vele jonge kinderen in contact worden gebracht met live-muziek. Met Duo Leeghwater en Stichting KNARS maakt ze hedendaagse muziektheater producties in eigen beheer.
Composers Treat
In januari 2026 brengen we een nieuwe editie van Composer's Treat in het Plein Theater. We hebben de jonge Japanse componiste Minami Nagai (1993), die studeert aan de Muziek- en Theateracademie in München, uitgenodigd om haar horizon te verbreden en de Nederlandse muziekscene te ontmoeten. Minami werkt samen met de veelzijdige fluitiste en ambassadeur van hedendaagse muziek Marieke Franssen aan een nieuw compositie-idee. De uitkomst van deze residentie wordt gepresenteerd tijdens het eerste concert van Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam in januari 2026 met een performance en interview met de twee kunstenaars.

Minami Nagai
Minami Nagai (Osaka, 1993) is componist en pianiste. Na haar afstuderen in compositie aan de Tokyo University of the Arts verhuisde ze in 2022 naar Duitsland en rondt ze haar master af aan de University of Music and Performing Arts Munich bij Prof. Moritz Eggert. Ze won de hoogste prijs op de 8e Tokyo International Art Song Composition Competition. Recente projecten omvatten het orkestwerk The Peacock Spreading its Feathers met de New Japan Philharmonic (2024), het ballet umschlungen voor de Balletacademie München & Ensemble Oktopus (mei 2025) en de nieuwe opera The Ship Finally Fell Asleep in Tokyo (juni 2025).

Met een voorliefde voor experiment en vernieuwing presenteert het Plein Theater Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam. Gloednieuwe composities van toonaangevende musici vormen de ingrediënten van deze concertserie voor hedendaagse muziek.

Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam: Marieke Franssen & Minami Nagai (Composer’s Treat)
On Saturday 17 January at 8.30 PM there will be a new edition of Composer's Treat at the Plein Theatre. Japanese composer Minami Nagai (1993) a student at the Academy of Music and Theatre in Munich, has been invited by us to the Plein Theatre to spend a week working on a new composition idea with the versatile flutist and ambassador of contemporary music Marieke Franssen. The presentation of this residency will take place during the first Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam in 2026 with a performance and interviews with the two artists.
In addition, Franssen will play a number of pieces by other composers, such as Yan Maresz - Circumambulation (1993), Ruud Roelofsen - Schimmenwereld for bass flute and live electronics (2024) (installation version), Rozalie Hirs - Article 8 (infinity) for flute and electronic sounds (2014) and Jacq Palinckx parts from 6x Maximal Music!
Program
Circumambulation responds to the polyphonic perception of a monophonic instrument. A continuous percussive pulse is interspersed with a more traditional melody, creating a duality that both complements and constrains each other.
The material for Schimmenwereld is based on texts from the ‘Dromenboek’ (Dream Book) by author and psychotherapist Frederik van Eeden (known for De koele meren des doods (The Cool Lakes of Death) and De kleine Johannes (Little Johannes), among others). Roelofsen creates an acoustic dream world by amplifying sounds from the inside of the bass flute, placing them under the microscope, as it were, and thus bringing the listener's ear very close to the sound source. These sounds are made spatial by means of reverbs and delays. Roelofsen and Franssen were invited to the renowned SWR studios in Freiburg to develop the electronics.
Article 8 [infinity] by Rozalie Hirs is a microtonal composition for flute and electronic sounds. Highly lyrical melodies are enveloped by, or intersect with, electronic glissandi that move in several large waves. The electronic waves are tailor-made by the composer from pure sine waves, using only binaural beatings and ring modulation. This results in an almost cosmic sound world.
Excerpts from 6x Maximal Music! by guitarist, improviser, and composer Jacq Palinckx intersect the program like fragments of memories of events. A seemingly soothing Nocturne, a short Ringtone, or a wild improvisation or a hypnotic beat Whang that degenerates completely.
Marieke Franssen
Marieke Franssen studied flute at the Conservatory of Amsterdam with Harrie Starreveld and at the International Ensemble Modern Academy in Frankfurt.
Marieke’s main focus is the contemporary repertoire, improvisation and the use of electronics. She regularly collaborates with composers, taking both their and her own ideas on flute playing to another level. She is interested in new ideas of presenting music to the audience and creating different ways of experiencing a concert. As member of the collective Frisse Oren she is involved in developing music theatre for children.
With her foundation Stichting KNARS she (co)creates contemporary music (theatre) projects for museums and galleries. Marieke is a regular member of Doelen Ensemble (Rotterdam), Frisse Oren and Duo Leeghwater. As a guest, she regularly plays with Ensemble Modern (Frankfurt), Ensemble Modern Orchestra (Frankfurt), Asko|Schönberg (Amsterdam), Insomnio (Utrecht) and Ensemble Interface (Frankfurt).
Composers Treat
In January 2026, we will present a new edition of Composer's Treat at the Plein Theater. We have invited the young Japanese composer Minami Nagai (born 1993), who is studying at the Music and Theatre Academy in Munich, to broaden her horizons and explore the Dutch music scene. Minami is collaborating with the versatile flautist and ambassador of contemporary music Marieke Franssen on a new composition. The outcome of this residency will be presented during the first concert of Nieuwe Noten Amsterdam in January 2026, with a performance and interview with the two artists.
Minami Nagai
Minami Nagai (Osaka, 1993) is a composer and pianist. After graduating in composition from Tokyo University of the Arts, she moved to Germany in 2022 and is completing her master's degree at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich with Prof. Moritz Eggert. She won the highest prize at the 8th Tokyo International Art Song Composition Competition.
