Trio Bier
Trio Bier is an Amsterdam cult band. They have survived a name change, a hiatus, tours through Yemen and Greece, and a pandemic.
Trio Bier embodies: Dutch-language songs, an urban spirit with a tender heart, and a longing for a bold life. It is pop music featuring sax and accordion; tangos, waltzes, polkas, and Americana, led by the crooning all-rounder Jan Eilander. It all started quite humbly: on the streets of Antwerp. They played until their hat held enough money for a round of beers, performing songs by others; especially sentimental Dutch ballads (smartlappen). After a night at Paradiso, the group decided to start creating their own music. By the next day, they had written three original songs. The songs kept coming, eventually resulting in a total of six albums.
Although the band enjoys touring the provinces, their greatest successes have been celebrated in the capital at venues such as Paradiso, Melkweg, and Kleine Komedie. The daily newspaper Het Parool named the Trio Bier classic 'Amsterdam, Oude Wolf' the unofficial anthem of Amsterdam, a distinction that led to a performance at the prestigious Carré theatre. For three years, the band organized club nights at KHL and Melkweg; these events gave young talent a chance to perform alongside the band, while writers, poets, and fellow musicians (such as The Lau, Raggende Manne, and Huub van der Lubbe) dropped by to contribute.
During the coronavirus pandemic, they performed almost weekly. They played in small lineups, unplugged, on the street, beneath the balcony of a retirement home, on the scaffolding outside the lead singer's house, and in venues with a maximum audience of thirty. But now that restrictions have lifted, they are back to touring the country at full strength. So, on November 11th, they will be at Paradiso. No candy, but songs!
