The Book Club x DNL: Parenting a child with special needs

Raising or supporting a child with special needs comes with unique challenges, joys, and questions that deserve space to be seen and shared. This special edition of The Book Club uses Sohn Won-pyung’s Almond as a starting point, a novel about a boy who was born with a brain condition that makes it hard for him to feel emotions such as fear or anger. Using quotes and insights from the book, we’ll have an honest, heart-centered conversation about how we can nurture children with special needs — in our homes, schools, and communities.
Together, we’ll explore:
- How to give children with special needs confidence and agency.
- The role of soft parenting and other approaches in helping them thrive.
- How siblings, caregivers, and wider society can be better allies and advocates.
Besides Almond, the following books will be the backbone of our conversation.
- The Whole-Brain Child by Daniel J. Siegel & Tina Payne Bryson
- The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
This is a warm, inclusive gathering for parents, caregivers, siblings, educators, and anyone who wants to listen, learn, and support. Expect thoughtful conversation, shared experiences, and practical tips — all in a safe space where every voice matters.
You do not have to read any of these books to join the discussion. Come as you are.
