Xico - Paths Of Sand + support: Andrea Bazzicalupo

Paths Of Sand is a selection of live improvisations recorded at Kaalstart Festival with an old piano inside a boat that traveled around the Netherlands in 2023. Through the use of generative effects and chaotic live sampling, Xico's set explored the improviser's interaction with this unpredictable companion and how that informed the task of generating complete structures that would again disappear. The EP has been recently released by byt' in a limited pressing of 200 vinyls.

Two years later, Xico's electroacoustic setup continues to evolve, becoming an increasingly personal instrument. After the addition of three transducer speakers, the piano becomes now a large speaker, a living body which engages in acoustic relationship with the space. Open compositions give way to lush, resonant soundscapes, balancing silence, voice, feedback and noise into a living, ever-shifting world.

The evening will be opened with a solo performance by Andrea Bazzicalupo. Improvisor, guitar player, composer, Andrea Bazzicalupo has been active in the field of creative music, modern jazz, improvisation and contemporary music since 2005. Essentially self-taught and always seeking multiple contexts, he is on an experimental life journey shaping ideas, skills and crafting diverse methods of expression, which feature a distinctive sonic sensibility and a strong physical approach.
