Save the Vondelbunker!

Dear friends, comrades, and supporters of the independent cultural scene,
 

We are Vondelbunker, an autonomous collective taking care of a fallout shelter in Vondelpark, Amsterdam. Run entirely by volunteers, we've kept our doors open to anyone who needed a space to create, experiment, perform, play chess, watch films, host exhibitions, play retro games and more. 

We never charge visitors, organizers, or artists. We believe that art, expression, experimentation, and community should not come with a price tag. By keeping our space free and accessible to everyone, we can give room to emerging artists, new ideas, and projects that can happen regardless of someone's budget. 

But right now, we need your help.

Like many independent spaces, our financial reserves went out of the window during covid. Since then, we've been working month after month to catch up with our expenses. Unfortunately, the bills caught up with us first. Rising energy costs, rent, planned maintenance, and unexpected repairs have left us in the red, putting the renewal of our rental agreement with the Municipality of Amsterdam at risk.

At a time when public life is becoming increasingly commercialized, we believe it's more important than ever to keep non-profit cultural spaces alive. Places where both artists and volunteers work together on equal footing to provide free access to culture.

We've always believed in the power of the underground and in our grassroots, Do-It-Yourself approach to organizing. That's why, faced with one of our biggest challenges yet, we're asking you to help us Do-It-Together.
