Open Monument Day at Mediamatic

Ever knew that the Oosterdok hides plenty of historical and cultural landmarks?
Join Mediamatic on the 13th of September as part of Open Monument Day to learn about the history of the Sluisdeurenloods (Canal Lock Gate Warehouse) and experience the immersive sonic installation hosted inside where water particles run as we are spectators of present ruins and future ghosts.
On the 12th and 13th of September more than 5000 monuments, from castles and churches to historic education institutions around Amsterdam, will open their doors for visitors for the Open Monument Day 2025. This year's theme of the annual event is "heritage and architecture' and is focused on the 750th anniversary of Amsterdam's foundation.
Sluisdeurenloods
On the 13th of September Mediamatic welcomes visitors to explore the socio-historical character of the Sluisdeurenloods or 'Canal Lock Gate Warehouse' which was originally built at the end of the 19th century. During the construction of the IJ tunnel, the land on which the warehouse used to be, had to be excavated, and the shipyard dismantled, moved and reconstructed at Dijkspark in 1957.

Lullaby for Floods Installation
The building was officially declared as a municipal cultural landmark in 2022. Now, the building is used for Mediamatic's public lectures, exhibitions, and as an event space. During the Open Monument Day, it will be the host of a live sonic composition and a performative installation by artist and architect Letizia Artioli. Letizia investigates the relationship between human beings and environmental data as a matter for research and creation. Titled Lullaby for Floods, her installation embeds data from disruptive floods happened between 2024 and 2025, live weather data (the cloud scanning from weather satellite data) at the moment of the live performance, and field recordings of flooded places before and after the flood.

Inside the Aquaponics - Aquaponics is a way to sustainably produce food in the city because it hardly takes up any space. Plants and fish are cultivated together. The fish excrete ammonia which gets transformed by bacteria into nitrate. The nitrate serves as fertilizer for the plants. Here we grow herbs spices and edible flowers that can be used in the Mediamatic ETEN restaurant. Anisa Xhomaqi
