GenZ Voice Recitals: Night, Moon and Love & Faralae
Splendor and Stichting VoorUit are happy to present "GenZ Voice Recitals”. This series of four double recitals plus one triple recital offers the audience a fresh look at classical music through the lens of Generation Z. Twelve talented voice students from the Conservatory of Amsterdam and their duo partners take you on a musical journey around the world.
The fourth stage: tenor Jason Li, soprano Rosella Tang, and pianist Isaac Lam (Hong Kong) tell the story of an unexpected nocturnal encounter in Hong Kong. A program featuring Cantonese and Western art songs about the night, the moon, and love.
Mezzo-soprano Paula Duarte and soprano Yulietta Quevedo (Spain) both sing and play the piano. They present a blend of poetry, theater, and music—a recital centered on a key figure in Spanish culture, history, and tradition: the poet Federico García Lorca.
Night, Moon, and Love — Entangling Emotions in Hong Kong
Tenor Jason Li: "Hong Kong is a magical city, where the lights never fade, and the city's voice is always alive. As people who are born and raised in Hong Kong, we often lose sight of how fast-paced this city—and our own lives—truly are. We rarely take the time to confront our deepest emotions, leaving them neglected, forgotten. But then, on some random night, we might glance up and notice the moon, and in that quiet moment, our deepest emotions slowly blossom. As two singers from Hong Kong, we would like to take this opportunity to share a story about an unexpected nighttime encounter in Hong Kong, where two young adults with a complex relationship cross paths, awakening emotions hidden deep within their hearts. As people from Hong Kong who often struggle to express themselves, they can only rely on the moon to connect with each other. The two singers act as the protagonists, searching their innermost desires through songs and dialogues. The programme includes a few Cantonese art songs, together with songs from different countries about night, moon and love."
Faralae is a fusion of poetry, theater, and music. It is a recital that seeks to bring audiences closer to the work of poet Federico García Lorca and, through it, to a vital part of Spanish culture, history and tradition. At the heart of the recital lie the Canciones populares españolas that Lorca himself harmonized and adapted. What is extra special is that the recital is given by two doubly talented artists: both Paula and Yulietta will sing and play the piano, creating a connection that transcends the voice alone.
Federico García Lorca (1898–1936) was one of the most influential poets and playwrights of 20th-century Spanish literature. Born in Fuente Vaqueros, Granada, he stood out from an early age for his artistic talent and his sensitivity to poetry, music, and theater. His work, deeply rooted in Andalusian popular traditions, explored universal themes such as love, death, freedom, and marginalization. Lorca lived his homosexuality in a time marked by repression, which made him both vulnerable and, at the same time, a symbol of resistance. Beyond his theater, Blood Wedding, Yerma, The House of Bernarda Alba, he cultivated a close relationship with music: he was a student of the pianist Manuel de Falla, collected and harmonized Spanish folk songs, and performed them at the piano alongside La Argentinita. At the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War, he was arrested for his liberal ideas and his sexual identity. In August 1936 he was executed near Granada, leaving behind an immortal legacy.
