MISSISSIPPI RECORDS Presents: “THEY’RE DREAMING ME” – 20 years of Mississippi Records Archives

Nearly a decade after Mississippi Records last crash landed at OCCII, we return with another dispatch on preserving DIY underground music in the decrepit 21st century. Label head Cyrus Moussavi shares rare images, stories, and films about the music of Emahoy Tsege Mariam Gebru, Brother Theotis Taylor, and Abner Jay, among others, and discusses the evolving spirit of Mississippi Records itself.

On this special evening, we’re joined by Jamal Khadar, music researcher and co-producer on our recent Alick Nkhata record, who dives into his deep well of research on African country music, tracing timelines across the Atlantic.

Afterwards, Deep cut vinyl DJ sets, Jamming, drinks, and dancing follow!

Assiko Golden Band de Grand Yoff is the sprawling drum collective tearing up Dakar’s nightlife scene. Senegalese poet Djiby Ly (Wau Wau Collectif) is backed by fourteen different percussive instruments plus horns, winds, balafon, and the occasional accordion, combining Count Ossie’s spiritually elevated polyrhythms with Fela Kuti’s orchestra and Tony Allen’s groove.
...
This is vital, exciting, and innovative music, alive with energy and purpose, a band rooted in a very specific community but speaking to the world.
