+ Q&A with special guests
The Indonesia Gelap (“Dark Indonesia”) rally began in February 2025 as a student-led outcry and quickly grew into a nationwide protest against increasing authoritarian drift under President Prabowo Subianto. Earlier this year his government announced the writing of a new national history, an obvious attempt to whitewash Suharto-era human rights violations. The current crackdown on protesters has been brutal. 10 people have died, over 3000 people have been arrested and more than 1000 wounded. Hundreds of people are still in custody, online organising platforms are swept by the police, and arrests continue every day.
Pro-democracy activists at risk urgently need funding to organise their safety. At this solidarity event we screen Turang (1958), set during Indonesia’s struggle for independence from Dutch colonial rule, centering grassroots anti-colonialism. Director Bachtiar Siagian, a member of Indonesia’s left-wing cultural organisation Lekra, was imprisoned for 12 years and his work considered lost. His daughter recently recovered a copy of this landmark of Indonesian cinema and an important document of the Indonesian left. The screening will be followed by a conversation with guests.
All ticket proceeds support activist safety. Additional on-site donations welcome.
