+ Q&A with special guests
The Indonesia Gelap (“Dark Indonesia”) rally began in February 2025 as a student-led outcry against corruption, authoritarian drift, and state violence under President Prabowo Subianto. It quickly grew into a nationwide protest. In addition to violent oppression of public protest, the government announced the writing of a new national history, an obvious exercise in the whitewashing of Suharto-era human rights violations.
The crackdown on protesters including students, civil society, and marginalised workers has been brutal. So far, 3337 people were arrested in 20 cities, 1042 people wounded, and 10 people died. Currently, 959 people are still held as arrests continue. Activists receive threats and online organising platforms are swept by the police.
To raise funds and awareness in support of the people working for the safety of activists on the ground, we organise a special screening of Turang (1958) by Bachtiar Siagian. Before his 12-year imprisonment the filmmaker was a member of Lekra, Indonesia’s most prominent left-wing cultural organisation before its annihilation in 1965.
For decades the film was considered lost, but thanks to the efforts of the director’s daughter, it was recently rediscovered. Set against the backdrop of Indonesia’s struggle for independence from Dutch colonial rule, Turang is a film of grassroots anti-colonialism, where survival through collective care is central.
The film will be followed by a conversation with guests. All proceeds of ticket sales will go to support activist safety. Additional donation options on site.
