Director Bachtiar Siagian\, a member of Indonesia’s lef t-wing\ncultural organisation Lekra\, was imprisoned for 12 years and his work considered\nlost. His daughter recently recovered a copy of this land mark of Indonesian\ncinema and an important document of the Indonesian lef t. Earlier this year his government announc ed the writing of a new national history, an obvious attempt to whitewash Suharto-era human rights violations. The current crackdown on protesters h as been brutal. 10 people have died, over 3000 people have been arrested a nd more than 1000 wounded.
