FCA BookClub - Earthseed Series: Parable of the Talents by Octavia E. Butler

We’ll next read the Earthseed Series by Octavia E. Butler, consisting of Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents. We’ll read them over two meetings but you don’t need to have read both texts or attend both meetings, or anything like that.

“One of the world's most respected authors of science fiction imagines an apocalyptic near-future Earth where a remarkable young woman discovers that her destiny calls her to try and change the world around her. Octavia E. Butler's brilliant two-volume Earthseed saga offers a startling vision of an all-too-possible tomorrow, in which walls offer no protection from a civilization gone mad.

18th May - Parable of the Sower: In the aftermath of worldwide ecological and economic apocalypse, minister's daughter Lauren Oya Olamina escapes the slaughter that claims the lives of her family and nearly every other member of their gated California community. Heading
north with two young companions through an American wasteland, the courageous young woman faces dangers at every turn while spreading the word of a remarkable new religion that embraces survival and change.
15th June - Parable of the Talents: Called to the new, hard truth of Earthseed, the small community of the dispossessed that now surrounds Lauren Olamina looks to her, their leader, for guidance. But when the evil that has grown out of the ashes of human society destroys all
she has built, the prophet is forced to choose between preserving her faith or her family.”

There will be a donation jar and some refreshments available (cash or pin). Please think about donating something if you are able; a place like NieuwLand can only exist through the contributions of volunteers and friends, who know of the importance of places like this, which
exist as alternatives to an individualistic society, capitalist economy and gentrifying neighbourhoods. To learn more about NieuwLand visit their website https://nieuwland.cc
We will be in an upstairs room at NieuwLand which unfortunately is not wheelchair accessible. If you have access needs regarding the event, that you feel may not be in place, please get in contact with us so that we can do our best to incorporate these.

The beautiful Het Fort van Sjakoo in Amsterdam has copies of both books listed on their website and is usually open to be contacted if you wish to order something they do not have in stock https://sjakoo.nl/

https://libro.fm/ has both audiobooks to buy

Parable of the Sower is also available as a graphic novel and by the time of our meeting in June Parable of the Talents will be too.

If you want to attend the session but find it difficult to get hold of the book we will try to help so reach out.

Like the FCA more generally we aim to be a harassment free space for everybody. If you are new to our meetings, or feel you need a refresher please read our code of conduct to find out what behaviours we hope for from you, and hold ourselves to in our sessions http://www.thefeministclub.nl/coc

If there are topics or questions you would like to discuss please bring those with you. We don’t plan our meetings in a very structured or top-down manner so all contributions are welcome and appreciated. We are looking forward to discussing these beautiful books together!
