Exhibition: The Last Iceberg
The sculpture The Last Iceberg looks like a small, broken-off segment of a much larger iceberg that has accidentally drifted into Amsterdam, following the IJ river. All the other icebergs have melted. This is the only one left.
For many people, climate change remains an abstract and elusive problem. This installation, ‘The Last Iceberg’, translates a global problem into a local, physical experience for a wide audience.
The work can be seen as a form of visual activism without being explicitly moralising. It raises questions, perhaps raises awareness, and invites discussion.
Studio Smulders is an art production company that focuses primarily on the creation of three-dimensional, monumental works of art for public spaces. In addition, the studio produces small-scale art objects in two- and three-dimensional forms, or specifically in a combination of both.
The studio works with a wide range of diverse materials, from natural raw materials such as straw, clay, and willow twigs to bronze, PETG, and light. The artworks vary in form, scale, and meaning; some have a distinctly activist character.
For many projects, a team is assembled consisting of specialists and experts from various disciplines. This creates a collaborative partnership tailored to each project, bringing together art, knowledge, creativity, and craftsmanship.
Godelieve Smulders is the art director and initiator of the projects.
