EAT is a performance series initiated in 2023 by Tomoko Mukaiyama. It explores the rituals of morning practices and the subtle interplay between cultural habits and natural forces that shape them.

Each edition of EAT delves into the material and sensory dimensions of our daily beginnings. For this iteration, we welcome food artist Asli Hatipoğlu and vocalist Claire Adams on board the Alhadj Djumaa — an Egyptian fishing boat that crossed the Mediterranean on July 25, 2013, carrying 282 refugees before being seized by the Italian coast guard. Today it sails Amsterdam's canals with Rederij Lampedusa. Physically taking place within the historic canals of Amsterdam, this breakfast experience centers around water as a vital element that connects all things. It asks participants to reflect on water's constant flow, its shifting presence, and the way it mirrors the realities of climate migration.

Over the course of a 50-minute journey, the meal becomes a collective ritual, a meditation, and a shared moment. EAT unfolds as a multi-course performance featuring ingredients, fermentations, and plants that trace the history of trade and the Dutch relationship with spices. Accompanied by live vocal compositions from early female creators, the narrative combines storytelling and music to highlight the shared humanness within our diverse stories. A meditative gateway into the day, EAT invites us to tune into the body, to sound, to taste, and to the fluid landscapes we inhabit

About the Artists

Aslı Hatipoğlu is a textile culinary artist who's interdisciplinary social practice focuses on curating participatory dinners and installations that shed light on how culinary history and agricultural politics are changing our relationship to food. From working with micro-scale bacteria and yeasts to insects such as the domesticated silkworm, Hatipoğlu critically investigates ways of relating to our environment and ourselves. She researches production supply chains through performative acts to shed light to how humans influence other living organisms.

Claire Adams is a Spanish-Dutch soprano, violinist and interdisciplinary maker whose work unfolds at the intersection of experimental music, performance and sonic storytelling. Blending voice and violin into layered, immersive sound worlds, she explores the porous boundaries between contemporary music, conceptual art-song and performative practice. Through intimate yet exploratory sonic languages, Claire creates spaces for reflection, seeking moments of stillness and emotional depth within increasingly fast-paced and fragmented societies.
