Paradise: Love is a film that resists easy moral positioning. It is at once austere, uncomfortable, darkly comic- and disturbingly lucid about the entanglements of desire, power and loneliness in a globalized world.
The film follows Teresa, a middle-aged Austrian woman who travels to Kenya for a holiday that quietly turns into participation in a form of female sex tourism. That premise alone could easily slide into satire or condemnation, but Seidl avoids both. Instead, he constructs a clinical, almost ethnographic frame in which behavior is observed rather than explained.
There is no narrative arc of redemption or downfall. What unfolds is repetition: encounters, negotiations, small humiliations, fleeting intimacies. This repetition becomes the structure through which the film makes its point.
One of the film’s most unsettling dimensions is how it complicates familiar power narratives. On the surface, Teresa holds economic power: she pays, she chooses. But Seidl gradually reveals this power to be fragile and contingent.
The result is not a simple reversal of exploitation, but a layered ambiguity where both sides are implicated, but not equally vulnerable.
