Celebrating 10 Years of The Hmm + Book Launch

Celebrating 10 Years of The Hmm + Book Launch
Earlier this year, the internet was briefly filled with the hope that 2026 might become the new 2016. In quasi-historical fashion, users resurfaced early Instagram filters and interfaces, Tumblr-motivational quotes, old memes, and other fragments of a supposedly simpler internet. Collectively, it became a meditation on how social media used to be better, or at least how much it felt better. Though users relied on a more generalised nostalgia to resurrect the aesthetic of the time, they were, in a sense, correct. The internet really did feel different. 2016 was the year that all news feeds became algorithmic, and with it our relationship with social media fundamentally changed.Serendipitously, The Hmm was also born ten years ago, in 2016. Since then, we have tried to trace, interrogate and intervene in the forces shaping our online lives, including the algorithmic feed itself. To celebrate this legacy, we are throwing a festive evening at W139 in Amsterdam, filled with performances, workshops, drinks and more.

Suggested For You: Reflecting on a decade in the feed

The evening will also mark the launch ofour 10-year anniversary publication: Suggested For You: Reflecting on a Decade in the Feed. Part celebration, part reflection, the book looks back at the algorithmic feed and the decade of internet cultures that has unfolded around it. Featuring essays, interviews, image contributions and artist profiles from Ruba Al-Sweel, Evelyn Austin and Rejo Zenger, Jak Ritger, Soyun Park and Leo Scarin, Noura Tafeche, Neema Githere, Alex Quicho, Constant Dullaart, Mamali Shafahi and Ali Eslami, Danielle Brathwaite-Shirley, K Allado McDowell and Aidan Walker, the publication brings together a range of perspectives on how the algorithmic feed has come to shape life online. You can already pre-order the book. It will be available to pick-up and purchase at the event.
