Who Am I Speaking To

Met Wie Spreek Ik is a short, magical-realistic film about Rens (37), a director of a music venue who is on the brink of a burn-out. After an emotional breakdown, he is unexpectedly called by Herman (65), an unknown man on a houseboat. What starts as an uncomfortable phone call, ends in an absurd, musical journey towards connection and self-insight.

The film poetically depicts a moment of non-verbal connection between two strangers. Creators Vera and Kwint, both neurodivergent, use their own experiences with autism to explore themes such as masking, exhaustion, and social scripts. The film moves beyond stereotypes, offering space for discomfort, vulnerability, and imagination.
With Whom Do I Speak (or Who Am I Speaking To) will be on display at Mediamatic for two months starting July 2025 as part of their program on neurodiversity.
We make films driven by a deep urge to understand and connect. As neurodivergent creators, we observe the world with a keen eye for the absurd and the unspoken. Our creative drive stems from a desire to make complex inner worlds visible and to give space to experiences that often remain unnamed. For us, film is a medium where we have control over the script, in contrast to the unpredictability of real life. We want to tell stories that offer comfort, that show it's okay not to know what to say sometimes. By incorporating our own perspective on social interaction and emotions into visuals and sound, we create work in which others can recognize themselves. We feel a great urgency to tell our story – because representation matters, and because we believe our perspective adds something essential to the film landscape.

Vera Lelie & Kwint Jongerius
Kwint and Vera are two neurodivergent creators with a shared fascination for the absurd, the unspoken, and the beauty of discomfort. Drawing from their personal experiences with autism, they explore how film can connect, reflect, and represent. With their analytical perspective and eye for detail, they uncover the subtleties of human interaction.
Vera has a background in fashion and scenography (Rietveld Academie) and has worked for theater, dance, and opera, among others. Kwint has been making films since a young age and is currently studying at Codam. Their first collaborative project, Met Wie Spreek Ik (Who Am I Speaking To), is a poetic short film about connection, masking, and letting go of control. Kwint and Vera combine visual power with substantive depth, showing how valuable it is when neurodivergent voices are given space in the film world.
Met Wie Spreek Ik is a poetic short film about a man on the verge of burnout who unexpectedly finds connection through a helpdesk phone call. As his reality slowly blurs, an intimate moment of non-verbal connection emerges—between two strangers, and with himself. The film explores themes such as social masking, loss of control, and emotional release from a neurodivergent perspective. It's a dreamy, absurd-realistic story about what can happen when you stop functioning for a moment—and start feeling.
