Under the Weather

Under the Weather
Workshop 12:30 - 17:00 hrs € Free

How does it feel to live in times of climate breakdown? In this workshop, we explore the various emotions, feelings and thought patterns that arise in each of us in response to the climate crisis and the underlying root causes. Throughout the four hours, we will take a closer look at shame, anger, sadness, and hope in the context of climate breakdown and climate justice activism.
Are emotions destructive, constructive, or both? Why do we think so? Are emotions fueling just action or paralysing and leading to inaction?
The workshop will encourage critical self-reflection and reflections on dynamics in wider society, as well as offer conceptual insights into the different themes. Furthermore, we examine to what extent these different emotions can be channeled into different directions. Specifically, we will introduce the concept of ‘emotional scripts’ as well as ‘emotional habitus’ and what cultivating such could look like. We will touch on topics such as complicity, denialism, privilege, activism, solidarity, and societal change.
On Sunday June 29th, Winnie and Harriët run a pilot workshop on Climate and Emotions, 12:30 - 17:00. This collaboration with Stroomversnellers, University of Antwerp and Disobedient Art School will take place in OT301 café in Amsterdam, starting with a pot-luck lunch. You’re warmly invited to join - your participation will help us practice and fine-tune the workshop, and your input and participation are much appreciated.
The workshop is constructed as part of the summer school ‘Anger, Backlash, Violence: Climate Activism Today’ at the University of Antwerp.
