Trendy Tropics, the new series of films that confronts a simple paradox: Europe loves to talk about the Global South but rarely listens to it. Social media feeds overflow with opinions, outrage, and trending solidarities. Yet behind these circulating images, real lives remain abstract, distant, almost fictional. We want to reverse the gaze. Films from Africa, Latin America and Asia speak back not as case studies, not as moral lessons, but as lived realities, contradictions and all that comes with it. Ventilator wants to invite audiences to step beyond the comfort of “awareness” and into the unsettling space of genuine encounter. With screenings, live music, shared food, and an open space for confrontation, Trendy Tropics merges art and activism not to make us feel better about the world, but to see it more clearly.

Pelo Malo (2013), directed by Mariana Rondón, tells the story of Junior, a nine-year-old Venezuelan boy obsessed with straightening his curly hair for his school picture. This fixation creates a tense relationship with his widowed mother, who reacts with homophobic panic to her son's delicacy in the harsh environment of Caracas.
Dengdeng is an Amsterdam-based DJ with Indo-Dutch roots who likes to turn up the heat on the dancefloor. She started out behind the decks at student cinema Kriterion and never stopped mixing the tracks she enjoys. Her sets are an energetic blend of reggaeton, dembow, baile funk, guaracha, neoperreo, cumbia, raptor house and more. IG: @dengdeng.dj , Soundcloud: dengdeng
