The Pelicot Case: in conversation with Caroline Darian

Caroline Darian, daughter of Gisèle Pelicot, shares her pursuit for justice in a society where danger often comes from within and where chemical submission is an overlooked phenomenon.

The Pelicot case shocked France and the rest of Europe. For years, Gisèle Pelicot had been drugged, raped, and filmed by her husband, who also invited countless other men to assault her while she was unconscious. It let to the biggest sexual assault case in France – held in public at the request of Gisèle, because ‘shame must change sides.’ With that, Gisèle Pelicot became a modern feminist icon.

While the Pelicot case focussed on the abuse of Gisèle, there is strong evidence that her husband, Dominique Pelicot, abused many more women, including his own daughter Caroline Darian. In her book Pour que l’on se souvienne, (So that we remember) Darian reports about the ‘tsunami’ that hit her life in 2020, when her father’s actions came to light. Like her mother, Darian wants to break the silence surrounding sexual violence, and in particular, chemical submission: the administration of psychoactive substances to abuse victims without their knowledge or consent.

In De Balie, Caroline Darian shares her personal story, the collective failure of doctors and institutions to recognize warning signs, and her pursuit for justice in a society where danger often comes from within.

De zaak-Pelicot schokte Frankrijk en de rest van Europa.
