Sudan in context: Islamic modernity, Sufism and contemporary society

Join leading scholar Michel Hoebink for a lively discussion of his new book, alongside a select panel of speakers. Together, they will explore Taha’s groundbreaking ideas and their enduring relevance today, while also reflecting on current developments in Sudan.

The Sudanese Muslim reformer Mahmud Muhammad Taha (d. 1985) is known for his bold proposals for Islamic legal reform. The mystical theology underlying this reform, however, has been largely overlooked.

The author of the book on Mahmud Muhammad Taha, Michel Hoebink, will introduce the main ideas of the book, which will be followed by a panel with Liana Saif, Imad Babikir, and Christopher Frattina, who will address different aspects of Taha’s thought. We will close with an interactive Q&A.
