About the Climate Choir

From January onwards, Klimaatkoor Amsterdam organises monthly rehearsals. We practise protest songs that we sing during climate actions and other events. Music comforts us. It is a creative outlet for frustrations. It is a way to create something beautiful together, driven by our desire to make the world better and more beautiful. Under the guidance of conductor Blue Dog (Matthias Konecny), you learn protest songs with which we inspire people to do better for Mother Earth. We are part of a national network of choirs (klimaatkoren.nl).

Frequently asked questions and answers

Do I need to be able to read sheet music to join? No. Our choir has no “entry level”. Everyone who loves singing and loves Mother Earth is welcome. There is sheet music, but we also work with audio files so you can learn songs by ear. We do sing in multiple parts, so if you do not have much experience, you are expected to practise your parts and try to improve. It is like football: our club does not set requirements, but we do sometimes play a match, and then it helps if the team wants to score. If I sing along, do I have to go onto the A12? No. As an action choir, we take part in all kinds of protests, demonstrations and other events. From singing during the Climate Vigil (klimaatwake-amsterdam.nl) to Extinction Rebellion actions where it is possible that you may be arrested. It is ALWAYS your own choice what you do or do not take part in. For every action, we clearly communicate beforehand whether you could face risks. That said: if you are not into activism at all, another choir might be a better choice. If you are unsure, you are very welcome to come and get a feel for it and see whether the Climate Choir is for you! Can I join if I do not live in Amsterdam? Yes, but do check klimaatkoren.nl to see whether there is a climate choir closer to you.
