Queer Sex Worker Strip Fest Poledance Roulette XXL: A Public (In)decency Super Show

With this pole dancing relay, sex workers and erotic dancers reclaim public space for one night. Organized by No Limits! Art Castle, Hxssy Productions, and De Balie.

Sex work is inextricably linked with Amsterdam. Ask people abroad about the city, and the Red Light District is inevitably mentioned. But sex workers are more than just a tourist attraction: historically, they have often been at the forefront of social struggles. They collaborated with feminists for (bodily) autonomy, with the squatter movement against the housing crisis, and with queer liberation movements during the AIDS epidemic.

The municipality of Amsterdam no longer wants sex work in the Red Light District and has been working for years on relocating it to a new erotic center. Sex workers feel driven out of the city and treated like victims. With this pole dancing relay, sex workers and erotic dancers reclaim public space for one night. An explosive mix of artistic performances embodies themes such as (queer) emancipation, sex, freedom, migration, urban development, and the power of free thinking.

No Limits! Art Castle, the art space founded by Jan Hoek, advocates for a borderless art world. Hxssy Productions, a platform for queer sex work and art, also consciously breaks with convention. During this relay, there are no boundaries between so-called ‘outsider’ artists and established names, between art and design, between day and night culture, or between fantasy and reality.

During the sixth edition of Vrijdenkersfestival, we will honor, question, and continue the Amsterdam tradition of liberal-mindedness. With online echo chambers growing louder and public debate is increasingly about choosing sides, we offer the stage to contemporary free thinkers who prefer doubt over certainty. Who would rather ask good questions than give the right answers. Who dare to assume they might be wrong. And in doing so, chart their own course — free from dogma, labels, and authority. Or, as Annie M.G. Schmidt perhaps captured the spirit of free thinking best: ‘Never do as your mother said, and all will turn out fine instead.’

Sekswerk is onlosmakelijk verbonden met Amsterdam. Vraag in het buitenland naar de stad, en De Wallen worden steevast genoemd. Maar sekswerkers zijn méér dan een toeristische bezienswaardigheid: historisch gezien stonden zij vaak aan de frontlinie van sociale strijd. Ze werkten samen met feministen voor (lichamelijke) zelfbeschikking, met de krakersbeweging tegen woningnood en met queer emancipatiebewegingen tijdens de aidsepidemie.

De gemeente Amsterdam wil geen sekswerk meer in De Wallen en werkt al jaren aan een nieuwe locatie voor een erotisch centrum. Sekswerkers voelen zich weggejaagd uit de stad en behandeld als slachtoffers. Met deze paaldansestafette eisen sekswerkers en erotische dansers, voor één avond de openbare ruimte op. Een explosieve mix van artistieke performances belichamen thema’s als (queer) emancipatie, seks, vrijheid, migratie, stedelijke ontwikkeling en de kracht van vrijdenken.

No Limits! Art Castle, de kunstruimte opgericht door Jan Hoek, zet zich in voor een kunstwereld zonder grenzen. Ook Hxssy Productions, een platform voor queer sekswerk en kunst, breekt bewust met conventies. Tijdens deze estafette zijn er geen scheidslijnen tussen zogenaamde ‘outsider’ kunstenaars en gevestigde namen, niet tussen kunst en design, tussen dag- en nachtcultuur, of tussen fantasie en werkelijkheid.
