Pleasure Parts (for de(con)struction)
Een auto-fictieve theatervoorstelling van twee (trans) non-binaire geliefden tijdens hun persoonlijke zoektocht naar lichamelijkheid, identiteit en gender. Tegen de achtergrond van een steeds radicaler wordende wereld, verkennen zij een meer onbevangen, niet-verontschuldigende houding door hun lichamen te claimen als bouwplaats ipv tempel.
Centraal op het podium staan twee in elkaar gevouwen, verwrongen aluminium kubussen, deels bedekt door semi-transparante latex gordijnen. Dit decor doet zowel denken aan een nachtmerrie-achtige operatiekamer als wel aan een industriële cocon of levensgrote driedimensionale puzzel. In elk geval belichaamt deze ruimte de binnenwereld van An en Lucian, dit is hun ruimte! Hier hoeven zij zich niet te verontschuldigen en kunnen zij schaamteloos hun trans identiteit onderzoeken.
Beiden hebben een curieuze en complexe relatie met hun lichaam, als gevolg van dysforie, eindeloze pogingen tot acceptatie van hun biologisch toegekende geslacht, maatschappelijke opgedrongen transfobie, of ook gewoon omdat lichamen vervreemdend kunnen zijn. In elk geval proberen ze grip op deze lichamelijkheid te krijgen door het aan te passen aan hun eigen idee. Ze experimenteren met ortheses, lichamelijke sculpturale verlengstukken die het hen mogelijk maken alles te herdefiniëren. Dit herdefiniëren gebeurt hardop met publiek als deelgenoot. Nieuwe extensies worden uitgeprobeerd, met oude overtuigingen wordt afgerekend. Steeds opnieuw het mes er in, letterlijk en figuurlijk.
Hun lichamen worden benaderd als een bouwplaats: onaf, veranderlijk en in voortdurende transitie. Deze claim verschuift het perspectief: weg van seksualisering, misgendering en dysforie, richting spel, plezier, euforie en zelfbeschikking.
Plein Theater Productiehuis
Het afgelopen jaar werken An Kuper en Lucian Squid in diverse residentieperiodes in het Plein Theater aan deze nieuwe voorstelling, die in premiere gaat in het Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam. In aanloop hiernaartoe geven zij een workshop op 29 januari.

Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam
Het internationale Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam biedt van 1 t/m 6 april opnieuw een podium aan beeldend theater, poppenspel en performances die de norm bevragen. Het thema van de 5e jubileumeditie is ‘The Nature of Things’ en geeft een radicaal antwoord op het westerse en koloniale framing. Beeldend theatermakers en performers vanuit de hele wereld komen bij elkaar tijdens dit festival.
Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam is queer, feministisch, activistisch en schittert bovenal in eigenwijsheid. Het is het enige festival in Nederland dat poppen- en objecttheater voor volwassenen koppelt aan queer verbeelding . In de safe space die het poppenspel creëert, kan iedereen zijn wie hen, zij, hij, wil en elkaar kan ontmoeten. Verwacht een uitdagende mix van lichamen, verhalen die weigeren in zich aan te passen in bestaande dominante structuren, visuele & erotische uitspattingen, edgy performances, prikkelende lezingen, queery eten en clubby afters.

An auto-fictional theatre performance by two (trans) non-binary lovers during their personal search for physicality, identity, and gender. Against the backdrop of an increasingly radicalizing world, they explore a more unguarded, unapologetic attitude by claiming their bodies as a construction site rather than a temple.
At the center of the stage stand two folded, twisted aluminum cubes, partially covered by semi-transparent latex curtains. The set evokes both a nightmare-like operating room and an industrial cocoon or a life-size three-dimensional puzzle. In any case, this space embodies the inner world of An and Lucian—this is their space. Here, they do not have to apologize and can shamelessly explore their trans identity.
Both have a curious and complex relationship with their bodies, as a result of dysphoria, endless attempts to accept their biologically assigned sex, socially imposed transphobia, or simply because bodies can be alienating. In any case, they attempt to gain control over this physicality by adapting it to their own vision. They experiment with orthoses—sculptural bodily extensions that allow them to redefine everything. This act of redefining takes place out loud, with the audience as accomplice. New extensions are tested, old beliefs are dismantled. Again and again, the knife goes in—literally and figuratively.
Their bodies are approached as a construction site: fluid, unfinished and in constant transition. This claim shifts the perspective away from sexualization, misgendering, and dysphoria, toward play, pleasure, euphoria, and self-determination.
Plein Theater Production house
Over the past year, An Kuper and Lucian Squid have been working on this new performance during various residencies at the Plein Theater, which will premiere at the Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam. In the run-up to this, they will be giving a workshop at January 29th.

From April 1st to 6th, the international Queering Puppets Festival Amsterdam once again offers a platform for visual theater, puppetry, and performances that defy the norm.
