PRACTICALLY ADULT (INEKE OOSTVEEN, SALON)
In the photo series 'Practically Adult', photographer Ineke Oostveen portrayed a group of young people for ten years: from the age of 15 to 25. Every two years she invited her daughter's high school class to her studio for a new portrait.
With the project, Oostveen investigates how young people develop on their way to adulthood. Not only does their appearance change, but their gaze also becomes visibly different.
The corona pandemic unexpectedly gave the series extra meaning. Just when the young people wanted to spread their wings after their exams, the world came to a standstill. They had a lot to deal with, but at the same time showed resilience.
Five successive portraits show how ten years passed. Faces get older, hair and clothing styles change, but personality and continuity remain recognizable.
'Practically adult’ shows how growing up leaves traces. In an uncertain world, vulnerability, change and resilience are given a face.
