In this course, you will learn from podcast maker Maartje Duin (The Plantation of Our Ancestors, 2020, and Mina & Mevrouw, 2024) how to build a thrilling scene in audio, and you will be challenged to create one yourself.
Maartje shares deleted scenes from The Plantation, screenshots of discussions with a relentless editor – and we end with an optional drink together.
Maartje Duin (1975) explores socially relevant themes in her podcasts and knows how to get people talking to each other. Her work (including The Plantation of Our Ancestors, Moslima, and Podkas: Pawel, the Polish Picker) has won awards and nominations both nationally and internationally, has been translated, and adapted into (musical) theatre productions.
By the end of the course, you will ideally be able to answer the following questions:
After the first session, you will receive an assignment, handout, and additional reading and listening tips. You will then have three weeks to create a thrilling scene of max. 3 minutes. During the second session, the results will be listened to and discussed collectively. Afterwards, you will have two weeks to incorporate the feedback before the final session.
All sessions are held from 19:30 to 22:00 at Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam-Noord.
We expect that you are able to record and edit audio independently and that you have access to your own equipment. If you are unsure about your skills or equipment, please contact us at akademie@podcastnetwerk.nl.
