Podcastakademie: Begroten & Aanvragen

Podcastakademie: Begroten & Aanvragen

Whether you want to apply for funding with your theatre group to create a radio play, are working on your first one-off documentary project, or are submitting your umpteenth application for a series: making podcasts costs money. Fortunately, there are increasing numbers of funds that accept applications for podcasts. In this workshop, you’ll learn from experienced producers and a lawyer and apply their insights to your own budget. The goal is for participants to leave with a clear understanding of how much funding their production needs to fairly compensate everyone involved. You’ll walk away with a realistic budget and concrete ideas of where to apply. The final session focuses on the legal side: what should you watch out for when working with colleagues or publishers?

Dates: October 1, 8 & 29, 2025
Time: 19:30–22:00
Registration deadline: September 17
Teachers: Randy Vermeulen, Emmie Kollau, and Gaico Bos

Session 1 (October 1, 2025): Budgeting

Get your Excel ready, because this first session is all about spreadsheets! Teacher Randy Vermeulen – who produced podcasts for AudioCollectief SCHIK and created the acclaimed podcast And No One Remained Untouched (VPRO, 2024) – explains how a budget tells the story of a project. Drawing on his experience, Randy will walk you through a budget and highlight costs that are often overlooked. Finally, he will assess: are there enough funding opportunities to cover your plan, or do you need to adjust your ambitions to remain fair?

Session 2 (October 8, 2025): Applying for Funding

Once you have a budget draft you can live with, it’s time to enter the application process. This process also contains elements that many creators overlook. Emmie Kollau, producer at Autres Directions and creator of many renowned titles such as Assembly Line Work (VPRO) and Here Hung a Painting (NRC), will guide you through the application process with a clear step-by-step approach. What are the pitfalls, and how do you avoid them?

Session 3 (October 29, 2025): The Legal Side of Podcasting

If talking about money is already hard for you, actual contracts are probably your worst nightmare. However, contracts are where all agreements around a production are formalised, and they are the only thing to fall back on in case of disputes. How do you divide intellectual property rights, unexpected income, and other matters? Do you even stand a chance against the legal team of a publisher? In this session, you can ask all your questions to experienced media and entertainment lawyer Gaico Bos from Bos Legal.

This course is accessible to everyone, regardless of your experience. It is helpful if you know how to use Excel to add up tables.
