Outdoor cinema Amsterdam: Better Man (2024) at Pllek (Amsterdam Noord, NDSM-Wharf)

England, from a working-class childhood in Stoke-on-Trent to the biggest stages in the world. In this musical biopic, pop star Robbie Williams is portrayed as an anthropomorphic chimpanzee – performed through motion capture by Jonno Davies and voiced by Williams himself – a bold choice that mirrors how he always felt: less evolved than everyone else, a “performing monkey” craving recognition and love. We follow his dizzying rise as the youngest member of the boy band Take That, his growth into a record-breaking solo artist and his equally spectacular fall, in which fame, addiction and self-doubt nearly swallow him whole. Beneath the haze of drink, drugs and consuming insecurity, Williams searches for a reckoning with his demons and with himself. Director Michael Gracey (The Greatest Showman) shapes his life into an exuberant, self-mocking spectacle full of dance and show-stopping numbers, which premiered at the Telluride Film Festival.

Genre: Dark Comedy | Docudrama | Psychological Drama | Biography | Fantasy | Music | Musical
