What does love do to sound? In Musique des Amants, love is not only warm and tender, but also sensual, unpredictable, obsessive and elusive. Duo Blaeu takes you on a journey through four French works in which desire constantly takes on a different form.
The music of French composers such as Franck, Debussy, Ravel and Messiaen captures the spirit of an era filled with dreams, subtlety and extraordinary beauty: the early 20th century, when Paris was buzzing with artistic innovation. In salons and studios, composers, poets and painters came together, inspiring one another and shaping a new cultural landscape.
Franck’s Violin Sonata in A major unfolds as a passionate declaration of love. Ravel seduces with the smouldering rhythms of his Pièce en forme de Habanera. In Messiaen’s Thème et variations, a simple theme becomes a kaleidoscope of colour, movement and stillness. Debussy’s Violin Sonata in G minor, his final completed composition, closes the programme with an intimate and unconventional reflection on love and farewell.
Four works, four ways of longing — from romantic ardour to musical abstraction. Duo Blaeu consists of violinist Feyona van Iersel and pianist Martijn Smits. They have been performing together for many years in various chamber music ensembles and are known for their personal and engaging performances.
