Movies that Matter On Tour: Artificial Justice

Who determines how algorithms judge, and on the basis of what data? And what happens to democratic control when decisions are left to AI? On Wednesday 25 February, the film Artificial Justice will be screened as part of the Movies that Matter On Tour programme. This film takes a critical look at the influence of artificial intelligence on the justice system and society. After the screening, there will be an interactive discussion with researcher Zoénie Deng from Waag Futurelab, who will delve deeper into the themes of the film and the social and ethical questions surrounding AI.

Artificial Justice

In the near future, the Spanish government wants to replace judges with artificial intelligence software, promising to streamline and depoliticise the justice system. Carmen Costa, a prominent judge, is invited to evaluate this new procedure.

But when Alicia Kóvack, the creator of the THENTE 1 software, is found dead, she realises that her life is in danger and that she will have to take on the powerful interests at play in the highest circles of the state. Spanish director Simón Casal takes the debate on the limits of artificial intelligence a step further in a gripping thriller about political conspiracies.

Zoénie Deng is a researcher in critical art and digital media at Waag Futurelab. She obtained her PhD from the University of Amsterdam in 2020. Her doctoral research focused on how socially engaged art can be critical without explicitly contradicting political authorities. Within the HAMLET project she works together with other European researchers to develop responsible AI tools for the creative and cultural sector. Deng will also bring her findings from the European research on AI in the creative sector into the discussion after the screening.

Movies that Matter is an annual film and debate festival that screens socially engaged and critical films. Movies that Matter On Tour brings a selection of these impactful festival films to 16 theatres throughout the Netherlands. From October to May, every month you can see an urgent film or documentary about human rights, freedom and justice, about struggle and hope.
