New music from Amsterdam post-punk and new wave veterans

The Amsterdam-based band Mecano became a cult name within the post-punk and new wave scene in the early 1980s. Centred around frontman, writer and visual artist Dirk Polak, the band developed an angular and experimental sound, characterised by his deep baritone and influences from the avant-garde, Russian literature and visual art.

Today, the band consists of Dirk Polak, Mick Ness, Mark Ritsema, Peter Jessen and Sin Banovic. This spring saw the release of their first new album in ten years: ‘MODUS VIVENDI’ (2026). The record brings together dystopian post-punk, industrial influences and melodic new wave in a sound that builds on Mecano’s rich history.
