Marxists in the Netherlands Unite!

Marxists in the Netherlands Unite!
Back to class. What does Marxism in the Netherlands look like today.

As the neoliberal world order of the last fifty years is crumbling, big business, billionairs and extreme-right parties are taking over politics at the global and domestic level. Old elements of the capitalist playbook are returning to the stage: Nationalism, militarisation, censorship and repression, combined with redistribution of wealth from the bottom to the top.
The Netherlands, too, has entered this new era, with the first government including far-right parties such as PVV and BBB. To fight back, we created a new network to promote Marxist research, teaching and organising in the Netherlands.

Together with Anja Meulenbelt Schrijver, feminist en activist Marcel van der Linden Global labour historian Pepijn Brandon Professor of Global Economic and Social History at the VU & Senior Researcher at the International Institute of Social History Agata Troost Sociologist | Expertise in social inequality and the contemporary class structure Windu Yusuf Researcher | Expertise in the history of democratic socialism in Indonesia Saskia Boumans Trade unionist and director at De Burcht Angela Wigger Researcher at RU | Expertise in Global Political Economy Sai Englert Lecturer at the University of Leiden | Expertise in political economy and development in the Middle East

More about the programme

During this event, we will introduce the network and explore two central themes. First, we will look into the history of Dutch Marxism. Secondly, we turn to the present: what can Marxist perspectives teach us about the direction the Netherlands and the world are taking today? Together with you, we want to discuss what Marxism means in our time and what insights it offers for understanding the transformations we are living through. What role can engaged marxists play in progressive social movements and anti-capitalist struggles?
