KGD (Kraken Gaat Door), is the name of a squat on Honthorststraat 42. The house is owned by the Russian Federation.
On 30 March 1981, the upper floors from Honthorststraat 42 were squatted for a first time during the National Squatting Day. In these Cold War years, the Soviet Union had set their Intourist travel agency on the ground floor of the house. Squatters took the empty upper floors and called their squat De Rooie Hont. Polak, the mayor at the time, sent the riot police to evict the squatters on 3 April 1981. These events are reported in this article and a few pictures can be found here.
Later, the ground floor from Honthorststraat 42 was also squatted and evicted in February 2008.
Honthorststraat 42, this time the whole house, was resquatted beginning of november 2023. Since a few months, the squatters are in a legal battle against the Russian Federation. Come along to support the KGD crew, get some warm food and some news about what's going on at Honthorststraat 42.
