Krek Wak Wou

Sometimes Jasper sells hotdogs. While he’s at work, he’ll send over Chinese voice messages from his boss, who happens to be passionate about learning Chinese. Youri, as a child, worked as a carpenter with his father — together they turned wood and glass into a window. And yet Sun lies on the sofa in his twenty-square-meter apartment.
It’s hard to say any of these has anything to do with their playing. A guy with a smart mouth might make every effort to some smart connections: the taste of sauce, meat, and bread—some kind of chewing-assemblage; the rough and the smooth; structure and material; even identity politics and postcolonialism. But they don’t like that. Or maybe it’s simply that hotdogs, windows, and lying on a sofa don’t need to have anything to do with improvisation.
In improvisation, those clever connections finally get to take a breath. That breath smooths out some ethical bumps. Oh yes, improvisation can smooth out certain swellings—those little lumps formed by the buildup of ethics. Oh yes, a phenomenology. A phenomenology of hotdogs that has nothing to do with playing.
