Hans Dulfer
Saxophonist Hans Dulfer is inextricably linked with Paradiso. Last year, he celebrated his 85th birthday in grand style in the Main Hall; this year, he’s keeping it intimate with an exclusive double bill in our Upstairs Hall, just two days before his birthday.
Dulfer! Total Response is Hans Dulfer’s regular band and has proven itself in recent years as a relentless yet playful unit, brimming with joy and energy. The band performs new tracks and stubborn rearrangements of Dulfer classics, featuring Dulfer's unshakeably defiant saxophone in the leading role. It is a blend of free-funk, jazz, Latin, and more that you won’t hear anywhere else.
Much like Dulfer, Pierre Courbois is one of the living legends of Dutch jazz scene. He was at the forefront of many developments in European (free) jazz, took lessons from Kenny Clarke in Paris, and has played alongside greats such as Eric Dolphy, Don Cherry, Charles Mingus, and John Coltrane. As a bandleader and drum innovator, he continues to seek out new creative perspectives. His playing is powerful and full of ideas. Courbois first met Dulfer for a duet earlier this year, and it was immediately clear that the collaboration deserved an encore.
