preserving memory … pickling the archive…
with Krijpfruit Collective
Archives are often portrayed and understood as stuffy old rooms, or hyper-efficient libraries: while this might be the case for some, it’s definitely not for all, or most. As artists and activists we see that the reality of the archive is oftentimes different: that of a living creature, taking the form of a box of collective memorabilia living under your bed, or the tangle of roughly written code behind a self-made website. While the archive rebels against our attempts at domestication, its contents won’t stagnate or rot. On the contrary, they will bubble and gurgle and spill out of their jar, while changing its texture and becoming rich with flavour in the process.
During this workshop, we will use preservation as a starting point to reflect on memory and the strategies we use to preserve it. Flavours and scents are often able to reach far deeper in memory than visual cues, and preservation allows us to be transported across time and place – in a different time, where apricots are in season, or in a different place, where the heat from the sun can dry tomatoes. You will be invited in taking part in a group conversation about this topic while tasting many delicious preserved food!
About us: The knijpfruit collective is two friends who are mainly obsessed with the fruit snack baby food but also activists within the queer community and practicing artists with different backgrounds. Ari is a self-taught illustrator, working in the NGO-world focusing on homelessness and harm reduction. Leyla is an artistic researcher working with performance art and creative methods to engage mostly young audiences in the art world.
