FCA Sunday Group Discussion: The 4B Movement

FCA Sunday Group Discussion: The 4B Movement

The 4B movement, which began in the mid-2010s, among other online feminist movements such as "Escape the corset" of #MeToo, began in South Korea. This movement calls to action women to refrain from dating, having sex with , having children with, and to stop marrying men (Korean translation here).

This movement was spurred as backlash to the high levels of gender inequality in South Korea, the gender wage gap, online harassment and also a horrific femicide that took place in 2016.

Korean women found this to be a safe space to discuss their grievances. This movement was quickly deamed negative, radical, and man-hating- all besides the point.

Soon after Donald Trump's election in the US, we saw this movement grow amongst American women, and recently, 6B4T has also been inspired in China, which also rejects consumerism and fosters mutual aid among unmarried women.

This is a clear example of the wonder that feminist activism on social media can lead to-- raising awareness, initiatives, etc. We will discuss the topic,  its meaning and use in different contexts, pros and cons, and /or alternatives (e.g., if people prefer alternatives to perform everyday feminist activism in their personal lives).

If you would like to join the discussion, please read our code of conduct and sign up through this link: https://forms.gle/JtnvNBdWTUFHXmxy7
