En avant mesdames!
On the occasion of International Women’s Day:
In the atmospheric main hall of Splendor, a theatrical ode resounds to the struggle, strength, and many voices of women throughout the centuries.
En Avant Mesdames is performed by the outstanding French soprano Éléonore Lemaire and the versatile pianist Frédéric Lagarde, in a concept and staging by Michel Giès. In a revue-style format – alternating sung, spoken, and danced scenes – a wide range of female archetypes passes before us: from the man-eater to the woman who longs to become a soldier, and from the woman who submits to oppression to the one who loses her illusions and rediscovers her voice. The tone is light, sharp, and at times humorous, without shying away from the seriousness of the subject.
Texts, melodies, and quotations by feministes avant la lettre and iconic artists form the foundation of the program. Among others, George Sand, Constance de Salm, May West, Fanny Mendelssohn, Suzy Delair, and Zizi Jeanmaire give voice to generations of women who refused to be reduced to prevailing ideals. Their words and music resonate powerfully at a time when emancipation is once again under pressure and gender-related violence and inequality remain pressing issues. Their stories also invite men into reflection and dialogue, precisely because emancipation is not a women’s issue alone.
“The absolute star of this intriguing evening of musical theatre was Eleonore Lemaire. She sang not only with impeccable style, but also with incredible beauty and intensity, performing music spanning four centuries.” – De Nieuwe Muze, 22.09.2025
