With his debut feature, Andrey Zvyagintsev emerged overnight as one of Russia’s most distinctive voices. Drawing on traditions of Tarkovskys and spiritual parable, he shapes cinema of silence, gesture, and landscape.
Two brothers live with their mother and grandmother on the edge of a lake. One day, after twelve years away, their father suddenly returns. He takes the boys on a trip to a remote island, framed as a lesson in manhood, authority, and survival, a journey that feels at once ordinary and biblical. Carved from silence and weather, between long stretches of sky and water, the film searches for the moment when childhood breaks, when obedience falters, and when love collides with authority.
The film premiered in Venice and received the Golden Lion.
