Peter Yates took a break from car chases and crime movies to direct a story about small-town kids trying to figure out who they are. Dave is a kid desperately trying to outrun his own background, even if it means pretending to be Italian. Yates keeps things stripped-down: no big speeches, no false triumph. The movie works because it treats the characters’ ambitions and embarrassments with the same level of seriousness. Breaking Away is lean, observant, and more interested in class tension and identity than in feel-good nostalgia.
This film is chosen by Elisabeth.
