'Cinema vérité is not the film of truth, but the truth of film.'

In the heat of a Parisian summer, Jean Rouch, ethnographer of the camera and Edgar Morin, sociologist of everyday life, set out to ask a city a single question: “Are you happy?” From this disarming prompt unfurl voices of workers, students, lovers, immigrants, survivors; fragments of a society caught between hope and fracture.

The film watches and listens, then turns its gaze back on itself, as participants confront their own images. Documentary becomes dialogue, cinema becomes an inquiry into truth.

A chronicle of Paris 1960, and of the eternal tension between reality and its reflection

This film is chosen by Merthe.
