Gakuryū Ishii keert terug naar zijn punk oorsprong met deze korte maar krachtige film over Dragon Eye Morrison, die van kinds af aan elektroshocktherapie ondergaat voor zijn agressief gedrag, totdat zijn lichaam zelf elektriciteit geleidt, en hij leert zijn agressie te uiten met zijn gitaar. De film zit vol met prachtige zwart-wit beelden en speciale effecten, met muziek van de industrial noise-punk band MACH-1.67.
Na zijn punk films van de jaren ’80 nam Ishii en pauze van tien jaar, en keerde hij terug met een geheel nieuwe stijl van bovennatuurlijke thrillers en metafysische/transcendentale films die minder plot gedreven waren, maar zich meer richtten op de interne wereld, in tegenstelling tot zijn explosieve films van voorheen. Deze experimentele film gaat over een actrice die een existentiële crisis ondergaat en dissocieert met de realiteit, die toch niet meer herkenbaar voor haar is. We hebben de film eerder aangeraden op basis van onze vertoning van David Lynch’s Inland Empire.
Gakuryū Ishii returns to his punk roots with this short but powerful film about Dragon Eye Morrison, who undergoes electroshock therapy from early childhood due to his aggressive behavior- until his body itself begins to conduct electricity and he learns to express his aggression through his guitar. The film is filled with striking black-and-white imagery and special effects, featuring music by the industrial noise-punk band MACH-1.67.
After his punk films of the 1980s, Ishii took a ten-year break and returned with an entirely new style of supernatural thrillers and metaphysical/transcendental films. These works were less plot-driven and focused more on the inner world, in contrast to the explosive nature of his earlier films. This experimental film follows an actress undergoing an existential crisis, dissociating from a reality that has become unrecognizable to her. We previously recommended the film in connection with our screening of David Lynch’s Inland Empire.
