SALOUA RAOUDA CHOUCAIR by Riet Wijnen
readings of the lexicon by Riet Wijnen and Yana Foqué, joined by Maria Barnas, Seamus Cater, Yolande Zola Zoli van der Heide, Stephan Kuderna and Jungmyung Lee at 6.30pm
The publication is an alternative monograph of the eponymous artist Saloua Raouda Choucair (1916–2017). The first part of the book is over 170 pictures the artist made of her own work. The second part is an extensive lexicon of words closely related to Choucair practice such as, ‘DNA’, ‘Dual’, ‘Water’, ‘Equation’, ‘Mu’allaqãt’, ’Salt and Pepper Shaker’, ‘Abstraction’ and ‘Clay and Ceramic’ developed by artists, designers, poets, biologists, hackers, musicians, technicians, translators, writers, and mathematicians. Rather than seeking an interpretation of these words in relation to Choucair’s practice, they were invited to write a personal definition addressing how the word applies in their practice and thinking. Multiple practitioners wrote on the same word, opening up each word to multiple interpretations and readings; facilitating looking at the work of Choucair through different lenses, crossing professions, geographies, cultural systems and time.
At 6.30pm there will be readings of the lexicon, for which Riet and Yana will be joined by contributors Maria Barnas, Seamus Cater, Yolande van der Heide, Stephan Kuderna and Jungmyung Lee.
