Join De Sering and ASEED for a powerful and nourishing evening with Abundia Alvarado, Nahuatl-Apache 2Spirit/Transfemme organizer, co-founder of Mariposas Rebeldes & Tierra Comida Libertad, and member of the first Autonomous Kitchen Council (AKC) in the U.S.
16:00 - 18:00 | Skillshare
Cook, learn, and connect. Join Abundia in this hands-on skillshare, where you'll learn to make traditional Nahuatl dishes like tortillas, gorditas, and atole. Abundia will share stories about corn's sacred role in Indigenous lifeways, resistance, and Abundia’s personal journey into food sovereignty organizing.
18:00 - 19:30 | Pop-Up Kitchen
Enjoy the foods prepared during the skillshare in a shared setting.
19:30 - 21:00 | Presentation & Q&A: The Autonomous Kitchen Council (AKC)
What is the Autonomous Kitchen Council? Why was it born—and where? How can you start one in your own community?
Abundia will share the framework of this emergent organizing model that centers food, mutual aid, and radical care in her 40-minute presentation. We'll explore how a growing network of AKCs can offer autonomous infrastructure and support for communities across different geographies. Afterwards we will have a 20-minute conversation connecting Abundia’s stories to the Dutch and global struggle for food autonomy, hosted by ASEED.
This is for anyone invested in mutual aid, herbalism, food sovereignty & justice, decolonial organizing, and regenerative resistance.
