Book presentation Presence

An evening devoted to the wonderful work of Ilona Plaum, with contributions from the art critic Hans den Hartog Jager and the graphic designer Janna Meeus

On Thursday 8th of May in Huis Marseille

My eyes are round, and constantly in motion. They weren’t made to stand still. They explore, zoom in and zoom out. [...] By zooming in on the tiny particles, that which contains them, falls apart. What remains is rhythm.’

Ilona Plaum writes these words in Presence, the first monograph on her work, which will be published on 8 May together with an eponymous exhibition in Huis Marseille. The foundation beneath all of Plaum’s continually suprising artwork – a mix of painting, drawing, sculpture and photography – is her unique mode of observation. Through her artworks the viewer enters the world as Ilona Plaum sees it. The artist focuses on the experience of horizon, perspective, depth effects and form, creating patterns of stripes and dots that seem to vibrate.

In his text contribution to Presence the art critic and writer Hans den Hartog Jager wonders: ‘What are we actually looking at when we see Week 5_2023?
A collage? A Cubist construction? A trompe-l’oeil? Or is it simply a photograph?’

On Thursday evening, May 8, Hans den Hartog Jager and Ilona Plaum will converse (in Dutch) about the many aspects that make her work so remarkable.
