billy roisz & gert-jan prins
both artists are working with sound towards the visual, and the visual towards sound, they have a similar aesthetic incorporating the sonic and musical qualities of electronic distortion and glitches. they first met in the early 2000s, when prins was often in austria working with the radical scene around peter rehberg‘s mego label, who was also part of the mimeo: the music in movement electronic orchestra. billy joined the synchronator orchestra, gert-jan‘s and bas van koolwijk‘s audiovisual project formed within the framework of sonic acts performing paradiso, and krems, austria. recently gj and billy met during the meakusma festival 2024, where they both performed solo, and thought of joining forces, so here we are.

Vienna-based musician and filmmaker Billy Roisz has been a driving force in the experimental music scene for many years. Self-taught, she stems from the extremely open DIY environment of the digital and analog electronic and noise scene in Vienna at the beginning of the 21st century. She has earned critical acclaim for her artistic work, which ranges from the cinematic (her films are regularly screened at major film festivals such as Berlinale-Shorts or the IFF Rotterdam) to pure audio works.

Lucas Abela / Justice Yeldham / dualpLOVER / (AU)
Lucas ‘Granpa’ Abela (fka Justice Yeldham) has been performing their signature instrument—shards of amplified glass—for over 20 years. Their singular practice spawned from the international noise music underground, where the glass evolved from a means to create free-noise cacophonies into an oddly versatile instrument producing an organic form of outsider electronica. Abela performs the shards like a bell-less saxophone, their lips subtly transmitting micro-sonic vibrations into the pane. This signal feeds a complex modular patch producing both raw audio & control voltages, so the dynamics & frequency of their performance modulates itself within varying parallel effects chains. Mixed together they create the illusion of a ghostly accompaniment, forming dense layers of anomalous music.

“The most exciting performer I have seen in the last three years – in fact, since I first saw Iggy Pop” – The WIRE magazine

Radical Democracy is a new collaboration between James Hoff and Ben Kudler. The duo hacks cameras from around the world in real time, collecting GPS data, used to control oscillators and trigger banks of sound samples. The result is a soundtrack that narrates the live visual feed that creates it, using the infrastructure of GPS and surveillance to reimagine both technologies outside of their contemporary military, industrial, and domestic applications.
